In Term 3 you will be working on a Creative Writing unit. As part of the creative writing process, you will be required to peer edit other classmates writing. This wikipage is designed to introduce you to the peer editing process and improve your writing skills, to be continued next term. Over the course of the next three weeks, you will be asked to read the novel 'Maniac Magee' at your own pace. Your task will be to choose three chapters from the novel to write summaries on, have your summaries edited by 3 classmates, and edit 3 other people's chapter summaries. Which students summaries you will be editing and who will be editing your summaries has already been chosen by Mr.Sitter. The due date for completion of writing and editing chapter summaries will be March 15th. This writing/peer editing assignment will be manditory for all students, and will comprise 15% of your Term 2 mark in Language Arts.
Instructions for this assignment:
1. While reading the novel 'Maniac Magee', chose any three chapters which you feel most interested in, and would like to write chapter summaries on
2. Chapter summaries are required to be at least 8 to 10 sentences in length
3. You will be required to edit the summaries of 3 classmates who have been be predetermined, and listed at the top of your own page
4. Pages have been set up for each person in class which can be found in the left hand margine of this wikipage under the heading 'Navigation'
5. You can open up your page and other people's pages for editing purposes by clicking on the person's page name
6. Once the page is open, click on the 'edit this page' button in the top tool bar, and you can then write or edit a summary
7. Remember click on the 'Save' button in the tool bar at the top of the page you are working on to save any completed writing or editing
8. Once you have clicked on a person's page, copy the original chapter summary, and paste it underneath...then begin the process of editing
9. The editors corrections should be done in bold lettering within the pasted copy so that corrections made by the editor are obvious to myself and the writer and a comparison can be made between the original and edited copy
*Remember to list the chapter number and title for each chapter summary you chose so the editor knows which chapters you are writing on
*You are not to make any unkind or inappropriate comments about what people have written...stick to the editng process only (as I will be reading everyone's edited paragraphs and know who the editors are)
*Do not edit a chapter summary that has already been edited by one of the two other editors assigned to that person
*Remember to write "Edited by..." so the person knows who edited which chapter summary
What does a chapter summary include?
Chapter summaries are just what they sound like...a short summary of what happened in any given chapter. Summaries can include things like: characters introduced; plot development; setting etc...You should not spend a lot of time on the summaries themselves, and it is recommended that you write your chapter summaries right after reading the chapter, while details about what you've read are still fresh in your mind.
What does peer editing include?
Peer editing entails the following...reading what a classmate has written for their chapter summary, and editing for things like: spelling; punctuation; sentence length etc...As part of the editing process, you will be required to read and 3 chapter summaries by 3 different people, and edit the paragraph using bold type, making appropriate changes where they are needed. Do not hesistate to show constructive critcism, for this is considered to be part of the editing process, and will help the person whose work you are editing to improve their writing (and hopefully help with your own writing).
